Fresh Soup

By Donovan | January 29th, 2006 | Add a Comment »

The food you will eat the most on Kilimanjaro is most likely soup. It’s always a great start to the lunch or dinner and helps warm your body. It’s pretty good for the first 3 days, but by day 6 and 7, it can get kind of old. The cooks on Kilimanjaro are great [...]

Good Ponchos

By Donovan | January 26th, 2006 | 2 Comments »

I can’t stress the importance of having a very good poncho on Kilimanjaro. When a downpour starts, which is usually on the first few days, you should be able to quickly put on a poncho, and it should be able to cover your day pack, which generally is holding your water, lunch, and a few [...]

Pee, Pee and More Pee

By Donovan | January 24th, 2006 | Add a Comment »

I know we have discussed this before in the article ” Taking a Whiz” but we can’t stress enough the amount that you should, and will, urinate on Mt. Kilimanjaro. It’s part of the process so just accept it. Both men and women should become very comfortable peeing around strangers, and at all points during [...]

By Donovan | January 19th, 2006 | Add a Comment »

Mt. Kilimanjaro is an excellent place to pop the marriage question. I mean, who is really going to say “no,” when they have two-day, 18,000 ft descent down a steep mountain. Also, you partner is so frazzled - from just having walked for seven days with little sleep - that they might just mumble “yes.” [...]

Check out the view from this picture at Karanga Camp, which sits at about 13,000 ft/3963 mt. This is usually day four on the Machame Route. You will have just come from Barranco Camp. The following day after Karanga Camp, you usually head to Barafu Camp.

Weigh the Packs

By Donovan | November 15th, 2005 | Add a Comment »

At the park entrance, near the trail head, there are places to weigh the packs that the porters are carrying. This is done by the park officials to make sure they aren’t carrying too much weight. Climber John Holman weighed his day pack which came in at 8kg, or 17.6 lbs. Most porters on Kilimanjaro [...]

Food on the Mountain

By Donovan | November 13th, 2005 | Add a Comment »

This picture is a typical meal on the mountain. It’s generally rice or a pasta, some grilled veggies and a piece of meat, with some soup and bread. The meat is generally chicken and sometimes you only get meat for the first few days, as there is no refrigeration on the mountain. Some companies [...]
