Good Kilimanjaro Picture Website

By Donovan | February 27th, 2006 | 1 Comment »

This is a great picture and reference site for climbing Kilimanjaro. The facts and figures link is a great one to check out because it breaks down the distances and time between the various camps. The time is relative for each group as it depends upon how much you stop, and if you have a [...]

Barafu Camp on Kilimanjaro - Machame Route

By Donovan | February 26th, 2006 | Add a Comment »

Here is a picture of Barafu Camp, your last night for ascending Kilimanjaro. It’s a very rocky, windy camp site set on the side of a major cliff and overlooking an enormous valley. If you are above the clouds, it’s quite beautiful as you can see the top of Kilimanjaro.
This is a very windy [...]

Mweka Camp - Last Day on Kilimanjaro

By Donovan | February 24th, 2006 | Add a Comment »

Mweka Camp is a nice cool relaxing place to camp. It’s sheltered beneath many trees and protects you from the wind. It kind of reminds me of Machame Camp, only there are more trees. If it rains, however, Mweka Camp would be very muddy. This is usually your last day on Mt. Kilimanjaro. [...]

Water on Kilimanjaro

By Donovan | February 15th, 2006 | Add a Comment »

This picture is an example of how to fill up your nalgene bottle, canteen, or camelback on Mount Kilimanjaro. Usually one of the porters will pack up fresh mountain water in a bucket. You can use your water pump, which you should bring, to clean the water even more. Then, to be extra safe, drop [...]

Ready, Aim, Fire - Bathrooms on Kilimanjaro

By Donovan | February 10th, 2006 | Add a Comment »

At each camp, all the way up the mountain, there are little wooden bathrooms that basically give you the privacy of going to bathroom. There is no toilet seat, just a typical squat and drop, with a small hole. Even though it’s sometimes difficult to use these, you should try. For others, it’s unpleasant to [...]

No Porters in Caves

By Donovan | February 5th, 2006 | Add a Comment »

Here is a sign at Shira Camp, usually on Day 2. There are a few caves around where some of the porters and guides used to sleep at night. Make sure your porters sleeps inside a tent or a mess tent with the rest. Ask the company before you climb where the porters are sleeping. [...]

Great Barranco Wall

By Donovan | February 4th, 2006 | Add a Comment »

As you will see when you arrive at Barranco Camp, you will have a huge climb out of the canyon the following morning. The Barranco Wall is an enormous cliff wall, with switch backs, enormous rocks, and very steep inclines going up the side of the mountain. It’s also called the breakfast wall as many [...]

What Will You Eat Each Day?

By Donovan | February 3rd, 2006 | Add a Comment »

Here is a typical lunch meal on Kilimanjaro. You always have a mystery soup, possibly some meat - like this chicken that was cooked to bone (but tasted dam good) - and a tuna fish and vegetarian pasta. Sometimes when you are walking long days, then you bring a bag lunch, which the cooks give [...]

Long Line

This was a large group of 30 people, so typically you don’t have a group this size. Generally, you start as a tight group for the first hour or two each morning. Slowly everyone spreads out over a few miles, depending upon how many breaks they take and their hiking pace.
