I recently received a question on whether we could supply sleeping bags for a climb up Kilimanjaro. Unlike Nepal and other mountain regions where you buy sleeping bags in the city, you pretty much can’t buy, rent, or find sleeping bags in Tanzania. There might be a few outfitters that have a stash of sleeping bags, but in general, these are hard to find. If somebody does know something that does exist, please let me know!
If you do get some used sleeping bags arranged from the mountaineering company, remember that these are generally used, worn bags, and could not be at the same degree, or type, you anticipated. Some people bring cheap, unreliable, 2 season sleeping bags to Kilimanjaro that are not meant for sleeping at his altitudes in fierce wind – and sometimes they leave them with the mountaineering company. The ones that have the good sleeping bags, take them home.
It’s best to bring your own sleeping bag and gear on Kilimanjaro, so you know what to expect.
If you absolutely 100 percent need to get gear on arrival, read “Renting Gear for Climbing Kilimanjaro.”
