Western Breach Still Closed

Climbing Closed As of March 2006, the Western Breach is still closed, due to the Western Breach investigation that is still taking place. A number of porters and tourists were killed back in January 2006, due to a number of rocks that broke loose from the glacier. Most of the climbers planning to ascend via the Western Breach, through Arrow Glacier Camp, are now going up the Machame Route. You could also climb the Marangu or Rongai route to make it to the …

Mawenzi or Hans Meyer Peak
This is a picture of Mawenzi or Hans Meyer Peak. This peak sits to the East of Kilimanjaro and you pass it while hiking up the Marangu Route. Mawenzi Hut sits at the base of this peak and is usually the third night of camping on the Marangu route. From Moshi, Mawenzi never really seems that big, but once you start to get close, it’s a towering mountain.

Shira Camp Picture - Kilimanjaro Camp
Here is a picture of Shira Camp One, usually the second night while climbing Kilimanjaro on the Machame Route. It can also be the third night while coming up the Lemosho Route. Shira One is a fairly barren site, with lots of space for big groups. It’s probably my least favorite camp as it’s fairly exposed to wind and rain. If you need emergency evacuation, you can still easily get down from the Machame Route, by hiking to Shira Camp Two and then arranging for an emergency evacuation.

Barafu Camp on Kilimanjaro - Machame Route
Here is a picture of Barafu Camp, your last night for ascending Kilimanjaro. It’s a very rocky, windy camp site set on the side of a major cliff and overlooking an enormous valley. If you are above the clouds, it’s quite beautiful as you can see the top of Kilimanjaro.
This is a very windy camp, so you should be prepared to spend lots of time in your tent. If you came from Karanga Camp, you should have a good portion of the day to relax, and to go to bed early, as you get up at around 11:00 to …

Lava Tower Pictures
Lava Tower is a great hike between Shira Camp and Barranco Camp. It’s a great way to help acclimate to the altitude - hike high, sleep low - as it’s an extra few thousand feet above Barranco Camp. Lava Tower is also a campsite for the Western Breach Route. It’s the camping area before Arrow Glacier Camp, which is half way up the Western Breach.
As you can see from this picture, sometimes the area is very cloudy and so you can’t see much.

360 View from Uhuru Peak - Kilimanjaro Picture
Here is a great Kilimanjaro picture. This guy has stitched together an old panoramic view from the top Kilimanjaro. It shows the Western Breach, Reusch Crater and Mawenzi peak.

Mweka Camp - Last Day on Kilimanjaro
Mweka Camp is a nice cool relaxing place to camp. It’s sheltered beneath many trees and protects you from the wind. It kind of reminds me of Machame Camp, only there are more trees. If it rains, however, Mweka Camp would be very muddy. This is usually your last day on Mt. Kilimanjaro. You have a short 3 hour walk the following day.
