Tanzania Visa

You need visas for both Kenya and Tanzania. You can purchase a visa for Tanzania at the border town, Namanga, on arrival from Kenya. You can get a 7-day transit visa in Kenya if you are coming from Nairobi airport - cost is $20 - and going into Tanzania. Tourist visas are also avaiable on arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport and Dar es Salaam. They are usually single entry.

Medical Insurance For Kilimanjaro

Almost all mountaineering companies make you get some sort of medical insurance for your climb up Kilimanjaro. If you don’t have any medical insurance that will cover you climbing a mountain, in a different country, then it’s best you shop for a policy in case something happens. Plus, most foreign companies will not take you up the mountain, unless you can provide proof of insurance. I am sure there are some local companies in Tanzania that don’t care if you have insurance, but that’s a risk you choose to take.

Meet the Park Warden in Marangu

If you really want to meet the Kilimanjaro park warden, you can usually find him, or one of his representatives at the Marangu park gate in the office building. Usually they are quite busy, according to the secretary, but sometimes you are able to get an audience with him.

How to Get Diamox for Altitude Sickness

Diamox, also known as Acetazolamide, is a prescription for altitude sickness, making it easier to keep climbing the mountain. In order to get Diamox, call your doctor, tell them where they are going, what altitude you will be at, and how long you will be on the mountain. Ask for enough tablets to cover another trip later, if you should go again. Are you only going to assent on this trip? In other words, you want enough so you don’t have to call back in 6 months.

KCMC Hospital

If you have a medical emergency in Tanzania, or on the mountain, Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre, known as KCMC, is the best place to go if you have a serious medical emergency. They can treat most everything, including malaria. The hospital is located outside a few miles outside of Moshi on Sokoin Rd. It’s one of the most well-respected hospitals in Tanzania and has hundreds of foreigners working there.
