Mt. Kilimanjaro Prices

Get the run down on prices for climbing Africa’s highest mountain.

On A Budget!

Don’t come to climb Kilimanjaro if you are “on a budget.” I received a phone call the other day, from someone looking for a cheap, but quality climb up Kilimanjaro. Budget trips don’t seem to really exist on Kilimanjaro anymore. Budget trips did exist a few years, but after prices for the park fees went up, you are most likely going to spend AT LEAST $1000 on trip. And this $1000 would be a low-end trip purchased and organized when you arrive.

If you are spending $1000, I don’t really consider that to be a “budget climb” anymore. If you are …

Kilimanjaro Park Fees

In 2006, the Kilimanjaro National park fees were dramatically increased. Almost all outfitters mountaineering companies include the park fees into the overall price of the trip. However, it’s important to see how the price breaks down:

This is PER PERSON, PER DAY on the mountain.

Daily Charge $60.00
For a six day trip, you would pay $360.00 per person to the Tanzanian government. On a seven day trip, you would pay $420.00 per person.

Night Charge $40.00
For a six day trip, you would pay $200.00 per person to the Tanzanian government. On a seven day trip, you would pay $240.00 per person.

Why increase prices in Tanzania?

Although it seems like prices for Tanzania - to climb Kilimanjaro and go on safari - are already expensive, there is a long-term, sustainable reason for the increase. In the last 10 years, the number of tourists climbing the mountain have doubled, adding 25,000 on the mountain each year. The same is true for safaris.

This article, Bid To Preserve Tanzanian Heritage, on Mt. Kilimanjaro makes you understand the reasoning behind the increase. I am a firm believe that about 90 percent of the Tanzanian travelers go to the same three places - and that the rest of …

Price Increase

Prices are continuing to go up in Tanzania. I just saw some of the 2006 base rate prices and it’s astronomical how much more people will have to pay to climb the mountain. These fees will typical increase a climb by about $250 per person. For all the poor backpackers out there, you have to really want to climb Kilimanjaro to justify spending this kind of money.

Tanzania to raise entry fees in Kilimanjaro and Serengeti
After months of hot debate over new park entry fees to Tanzania’s two famous tourist parks, Tanzania National Parks authority has issued hiked rates to foreign …

Park fee increase won`t affect tourism

I am really upset that the prices for the Serengetti and Mt. Kilimanjaro continue to rise. I think it will become harder for budget backpackers to visit the country - and be able to climb the mountain and go on safari. Read the story below in the Sunday Observer

Park fee increase won`t affect tourism
The Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Zakia Meghji, has said that the increase by more than 100 per cent of entrance park fees for Serengeti and Kilimanjaro national parks will not affect the tourism industry in the country.

The minister told the Sunday Observer in a telephone …

Who Gives the Best Tips?

As expected, Americans usually give the best tips, and are most concerned about it, while climbing Kilimanjaro. The other “good tippers” are the Canadians, English, Australians, Kiwis, and perhaps the odd South African.

Conversly, known to be the worst tippers are the Germans, Russians, French and Tanzanians. Most likely, it’s just a cultural norm.
I once had an assistant guide tell me that he carried a German’s bag for 7 days up the mountain, and afterwards, he gave him $5. He was pretty upset, as many of them rely on the tip, more than what they are getting paid from the …

Kilimanjaro View From Moshi

This is a great view of Mt. Kilimanjaro from Moshi town. Normally Kilimanjaro doesn’t look like a huge mountain. As you can see, however, the mountain sits high up in the surrounding highlands.

Looking For Others

Thousands of travelers come to Tanzania each year looking to join a group on safari or a climb up Mt. Kilimanjaro. These travelers - usually backpackers - are looking to save some money and join a fun group for their adventures. The theory is, the more people you have on a climb or on safari, the lower the price. In fact, it’s almost too expensive to go on safari alone (Kilimanjaro can be managed), as the cost could start at about $200 per day for a very, very budget trip - that’s if you are lucky and anyone is willing to take you.

The problem with arriving on your own, and looking for a group, is quite frankly it’s very difficult to find other single people looking to form a group. First off all, there isn’t one centralized place to find other travelers looking to join a group. Distances to other cities, and tourists areas are somewhat far, and there isn’t hoards of people walking the streets with your same situations. You need a lot of time and energy if you plan to arrive and find a group to join. You can’t expect to show up one day, find a group in just a day or two, and be on the mountain or on safari a few days later. It just doesn’t happen that much, unless you get lucky. A good portion of the travelers that come to Tanzania are with planned organized groups and, after one day in the city, they head straight up to the mountain. After their climb up Kilimanjaro, the next day they leave on safari.

Park Fees Increase on Mt. Kilimanjaro

I know many people have already heard of this, but from January 2006, Tanzania national parks have increased their entry fees into the Serengeti, Kilimanjaro, Lake Manyara & Tarangire national parks. The vehicle crater fee for the Ngorongoro Conservation authorities have increased too.

This means anyone climbing Mt.Kilimanjaro will have an increase in their entry fees. As a climber, you don’t have to worry about it, as the company includes this fee in the prices. But the overall entry cost to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro is going up too.

What price should I pay?

How much should I pay for a Kilimanjaro climb? This is perhaps the most common question that vexes travelers.

The price of your trip ultimately depends upon YOU AND YOUR NEEDS.

For instance, the number of days on the mountain and the number of climbers determine a general price for a Kilimanjaro climb. And, the price is determined by the quality of trip you want to experience. You can find short, very cheap trips for $500 to $600 per person (not guaranteed to make it to the top) and you can find long, very expensive trips for $3000 to $4000 per …
