Kilimanjaro Podcast on NPR
I discovered this interesting Kilimanjaro link today. It’s an audio podcast of an NPR journalist’s climb up Mt. Kilimanjaro in 2004. It’s good to hear his take on climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro - and finally making it to the top. The podcast is brief, and makes the one week climb seems like it’s really fast.

There isn’t an insightful information that you can gleam from this, except “Pole, Pole,” which means slow in Swahili.

Stomach Virus - Podcast on Kilimanjaro
It can happen to anyone. You have prepared for one year to climb Africa’s highest mountain. You are fit, have all the right gear, bought your ticket and flew to East Africa. You are ready to start your climb and are at the base of the mountain. Now, all of a sudden, you feel really sick. It happens to lots of people - stress, new environment, new food, too many conflicting prescriptions, etc.
Here is a Kilimanjaro podcast of Alexa getting sick at the begining of day one on the Machame Route.

Kilimanjaro Song
Here is a great song that Chuck and his friends recorded before Chuck’s climb up Kilimanjaro. No - it’s not the Toto Africa song, “I blessed the rains down in Africa,” but rather some lyrics that were made up on the spot. The more you listen to it, the better it gets. Chuck’s playing bass.

Listen to Daisy discuss her second day
On a seperate note, after this interview, Daisy did make it almost to the top of Kilimanjaro. She made it about 3 hours from the top, but was forced down because of heavy wind and the pain of being very cold. None of Daisy’s gear ever arrived from her flight to Tanzania, so she forced to borrow clothes and get by with little equipment.

Cold, Wet and Pissed - Kilimanjaro Podcast
On Day 1 of our climb hiking up to Machame Camp, the rain started to pour. After an hour of solid rain, we ran into our first big issue on Kilimanjaro. It wasn’t with our group, it was another. There were two girls, wearing nothing more than shorts and tank tops, in the pouring rain. These girls didn’t even anything to keep them dry. There looked very upset, were soaked, a bit stressed out since there trip just started, and were trying to communicate with their assistant guide, who didn’t speak any English.
