Mazamas Summit Kilimanjaro

mazamaspic1.thumbnail.jpgA group from the Oregon-based Mazamas recently joined one of my climbs up Mt. Kilimanjaro. They spent eight days hiking up the Lemosho route, which enters Kilimanjaro from the west.

If you live in Washington or Oregon, I highly recommend joining the Mazamas, as they have a true love for the outdoors - and have both recreational and educational adventures to enjoy.

Special thanks to Jamaica, Mohammed, and the rest of the team for making it such a great trip!

Unsolicited Review - Porters and Safety

Here is an unsolicited email from some clients who recently returned from their climb. What makes this letter interesting is that our guide advised my client Ralph not to summit even though he was 1 day away. The point is - he should not jeopardizes the safety of himself, or the team, even though you traveled half way around the world and paid all this money to climb the mountain. Safety is always first!
And you should always go to the mountain with the intention of NOT making it to the summit. Also, it’s great to see he recognizes the …

Belarusians Arrive On Kilimanjaro!

Recently I heard from a group of 7 clients who managed to get to the summit of Kilimanjaro, Uhuru Peak. You can see their picture before the climb, when they are fresh, excited, and ready for the mountain, with their new trekking gear and a great attitude. And then you see their picture at the summit - exhausted, tired, cold, and ready to descend, as the 5 to 6 hour hike from Barafu Camp is one of the hardest parts of the trip.

While it’s always great to get to the legendary “you made it” sign on Kilimanjaro, most …

Chen Daddy's Kilimanjaro Video Library

I have to say, this is one of the funniest videos of some Kilimanjaro climbers. The main guy, known as “Chen Daddy” is hilarious with all his comments about NOT making it to the summit of Kilimanjaro on the easier Marangu route.

The first 10 seconds of the video is black, without any visual. But you will see a picture eventually. Watch it! And there is some dirty language in the video, but it’s all a good laugh.

Day By Day Tales on Mt. Kilimanjaro

From Moshi to Uhuru Peak
By Lee Abbamonte

Arrival into Tanzania
Jake and I left Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi after spending one night in Kenya’s capital and we left in search of answers. Answers to what it was about Kilimanjaro that had attracted us and attracts 25,000 people annually to attempt to climb its magical landscape. Answers to why we spent a small fortune to try something completely out of our normal realm. Answers to the most underlying question: could we do it?

About twenty minutes before we landed at Kilimanjaro International Airport, I looked out the window and saw something I’ll never forget. I saw the summit of Kilimanjaro peaking up above the clouds, above the altitude of our airplane. It was spectacular. We were so excited that we weren’t sure what to do at first. It was a long journey to get to this point, but it actually hit us that we would be climbing this monstrosity the next day. We took some phenomenal pictures from the plane and that view will always be embedded in my mind.

We finally arrived and were greeted by Babu, our driver that was sent by BootsnAll Travel Network to bring us to the office for our orientation for the following day. After meeting everyone and setting up a time later that afternoon for a gear inspection at the Zebra Hotel, we had lunch at the Sikh Café–home to the Moshi Lions Club meeting on the first of every month and some excellent Indian food.

Kilimanjaro Hakuna Matata: New Book

I stumbled upon a novice Mt Kilimanjaro climbing book today: Kilimanjaro: Hakuna Matata, by Chris Baker. I don’t know anything about this guy and it doesn’t seem like he is a famous writer, but he did take the time to write a book, which is a huge undertaking. I always find it interesting when people publish an entire book about their climbing experiences, as obviously it has changed them in some significant way. Read the book and find out. Please let me know if you do!

My favorite quote on his website, probably sums up what everyone should consider before …

Climb For A Cause - Kilimanjaro

Over the years, I have seen hundreds of people climb Kilimanjaro for certain causes. Whether it’s to raise awareness for “Aids/HIV awareness, homelessness, leukemia, cancer research, blindness, Darfur, exploited children, multiple sclerosis, orphans, etc,” I probably read of a new cause every other week. Don’t get me wrong - it’s a great thing. People raises money for good causes, the community gets involved, the proceeds go to a good cause, and someone travels half way around the world to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. They hold their sign, t-shirt, at the top of Kilimanjaro, and then begin the journey down. They come …

Climber Profile

kilimanjaropicture.thumbnail.JPG
This is a picture of two BootsnAll’s Kilimanjaro climbers who summited the top of Kilimanjaro a few weeks ago. They managed to successful;y climb seven days on the Machame route, despite a significant amount of snow. Here is there one word of wisdom for people considering climbing Mount Kiliamanjaro.

“Take it one day at a time, if you focus too much on the summit the rest of the mountain will pass you by.”

Kilimanjaro Slide Show

Check out this YouTube slide show from Lee and Jacob’s climb up Kilimanjaro. As you remember, I have profiled these two East Coasters before. Recently, we published Lee’s day-to-day account of climbing the mountain. Read Day by Day Tales on Mt. Kilimanjaro.

There are some good pictures of not only the epic scenery but also the toilet, food, and other random things to expect on Kili.

Your Hardcore If You Arrive Before Sunrise!

leeandjake.thumbnail.jpgMost Kilimanjaro climbers don’t arrive at the actual summit before sunrise. Most of them are very, very close to the top, within a few hundred yards (that could take an hour) or somewhere near Stella’s Point or Gilliman’s Point. These two bad-ass New Yorkers are sitting up the top, waiting for the sun to come. Good job Lee and Jacob, who organized their trip with Bootsnall.
