Mt. Kilimanjaro Gear

Should you use trekking poles? Can you rent gear in Moshi? Are gaiters good to have? All these questions and more can be answered in the Kilimanjaro Gear section.

Shut the F$#@ Up!

Imagine yourself at 15,000 ft on Kilimanjaro, tucked away into your tent at night, listening to only the silence outside and preparing for another day of Kilimanjaro’s trail. You are relaxing, thinking good thoughts, and everything is peaceful and solitude at camp.

Actually it’s quit the opposite.

If you are on the Marangu or Machame route in the busy time of year, which is when most people climb, each night you are in a designated camping area, one that can encompass hundreds and hundreds of people. There are a sea of tents and people through the camping areas.

There are people …

Don’t forget sunblock and sunglasses

Two crucial items that most people forget on Mt. Kilimanjaro is a sun block and sun glasses, both of which are imperative for not only having a good time, but also not damaging your eyes and your skin. The higher on the mountain, usually the last two to three days, the more intense the ultra-violet radiation can affect and the more important it’s to have the right protection, especially if the sun is out. Kilimanjaro, in particular, has a variety of ecosystems – rainforest, savanna, moorland, desert, snow – and even though it’s close to the equator, it’s still very cold and the weather is unpredictable, even in the summer months.

Much of the gear, like tents & sleeping mats, can be rented through your climbing company, but it’s important to have the basics.

Sleeping Bags on Kilimanjaro

Packing a sleeping bag to Tanzania is kind of pain in the butt. It takes up too much room in your backpack, and besides on Kilimanjaro (and maybe a few instances on safari), it’s not something you need in your day to day travels around the country. Usually on safari, and elsewhere around the country, it’s warm enough to get buy each night with a light sleep sheet or a very thin blanket. This obviously is for people who travel around the country in the dry seasons.

All of this all goes out the door when it comes to Mount Kilimanjaro.

Since …
